NDNU Summer Music Camp
for Piano & Strings
(Intermediate to Advanced)

About the Camp
NDNU Summer Music is a one week overnight music camp. Musical Activities include engaging classes, performances, private instruction, and ensemble coaching from some of the Bay Area's most extraordinary performers and music educators.
The Camp is open to talented piano and string instrumentalists aged 12-18*. Geared to the motivated young musician, the Camp enables pianists and string players to explore and enjoy music together in a creative and inspiring setting. Students will study essentials of musical understanding; develop sight-reading skills; discover great music of Western and Non-Western cultures; learn to work collaboratively with other musicians; and acquire performance techniques through classes, private lessons, and playing opportunities while building lasting friendships.
*Younger students admitted at the discretion of the faculty.
The Camp is made possible in part by a grant from the Ross McKee Foundation.
Evening Concerts
Unless otherwise noted, all concerts begin at 7:30 pm in Ralston Hall, and are free to the public.

Admission
Admission is by taped audition; please send a good quality recording on cassette or CD of two contrasting works (one showing lyrical playing, the other showing technique). Applications are due
Sunday, April 30. Returning students are not required to audition. Students are expected to perform at or above MTAC Level 6 or the equivalent.
Classes
Musicianship: Students learn important concepts of rhythm, sightreading and eartraining in a small classes geared to individual abilities.
Music History and Composition: Covers the different historical periods of music and their varied compositional approaches. Students hear and discuss a wide variety of music for many different instruments, and try their hand at their own masterworks!
Master Class: Students practice performing in front of an audience of their classmates, while receiving suggestions from faculty members.
Ensemble: Small groups of musicians work on repertoire for performance at the final recital of the camp.
Tone Chimes: Students learn ensemble skills and listening while being part of the "orchestra."
Private Lessons: One-on-one instruction with the camp's oustanding faculty members.
Recreational and Enrichment Activities
During the week, there will be a field trip to a major performing arts venue such as Davies Hall in San Francisco. Swimming parties at the University pool and other fun activities are also part of the daily schedule.
Faculty
Clint Cancio, pianist and violinist, received his BM degree in piano from NDNU, and is currently working toward his Master of Music degree in piano performance. Clint has been concertmaster of the USC Community Orchestra. He was second place winner of the Corpus Christi International Concerto Competition in 2001.
Daniel Glover, pianist, received an MM degree from the Juilliard School. He has concertized extensively including Europe, Asia, Canada and the Caribbean. He has served on the faculties of New York University, Kent State University Summer Piano Workshop and the University of the Virgin Islands.
Thomas Hansen, pianist, holds a BM degree from New England Conservatory and an MM from the University of Michigan. He has performed across the United States and Europe, recorded three shows for the Grand Piano TV program, appeared with the Peninsula and Redwood Symphonies, and is on the faculty of NDNU.
Kathleen Johnson, cellist, is a graduate of Indiana University School of Music. She is principal cellist with the Nova Vista Community Orchestra and conducts the California Youth Symphony Prep Orchestra, and has been a teacher in the San Carlos School District and at the Crestmont Conservatory of Music for many years.
Carole Mayedo, violinist, is a graduate of the College-Conservatory of Music of the University of Cincinnati with a BM in violin performance and an MM in music education. She has appeared with the Cincinnati Symphony, San Jose Symphony, Santa Cruz Symphony, Marin Symphony, the Orquesta Filarmonia de Guadalajara and others. She has recorded for Gem Records.
Ljubomir Velickovic is a violinist with considerable international
experience. He studied violin in Belgrade, Sophia, with teachers from
Moscow, Japan and the United States. He played in master classes for
Henry Roth, Isaac Stern, and Dorothy Delay. He has performed as a
soloist and in chamber music groups in Yugoslavia, France, Germany,
Italy, Belgium, Ireland, Canada, South Africa, Japan and the United
States. Lubo has a D.M.A. degree in violin performance at the
University of Texas at Austin.
He lives in Stockton, CA, where he is Assistant Concertmaster of the
Stockton Symphony and Concertmaster of Townsend Opera Players and
tenured first violinist of Sacramento Philharmonic. He is founder and
Director of Divertimento Chamber Group and Baroque Chamber Orchestra. He
is currently teaching and performing at NDNU and in various musical
projects.
Michael Schmitz, pianist, received a DMA in piano performance from the University of Arizona in Tucson. A winner of many scholarships and competitions, Dr. Schmitz has performed across the United States and in Mexico to high acclaim. Having taught at University of Arizona and Pima Community College, he is now Music Department Chairman at Notre Dame de Namur University.
